Let me know if you can relate to this.
Before I started to mediate, I overreacted to anything negative, obsessed over dumb (and often trivial) mistakes I made in the past, and worried about the future.
Here’s what I rarely focused on: It was really difficult for me to stay in the present and enjoy whatever I was doing at the time, without being consumed with thoughts about the past and the future.
Then I discovered meditation.
I use a very simple app called Headspace. I only meditate for 10 minutes a day. It took me a while to get into the habit, but now I look forward to it.
The benefit of meditation is supported by over 389 peer-reviewed studies. Some of these studies were conducted at major universities, including Harvard Medical School, Stanford Medical School, Yale Medical School, and UCLA Medical School.
These benefits almost defy belief. It makes you more empathetic. It reduces stress and has a positive impact on depression, blood pressure, fatigue and insomnia, among other health issues. It improves learning and memory. It makes you more creative. One study from the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center found that meditation produced a greater reduction in pain than morphine.
While these benefits are impressive, they’re not what motivate me to meditate.
Here’s what does.
Meditation makes me happier.
